APCOA and MEWA Make City Logistics More Sustainable

Textile Service Providers Use Parts of the Multi-Storey Car Parks as Transhipment Points

APCOA PARKING Germany is helping the textile service provider MEWA to reduce CO2 emissions in logistics

APCOA PARKING Germany is helping the textile service provider MEWA to reduce CO2 emissions in logistics. A joint pilot project has already started in Berlin. The cooperation is designed for the long term and is set to become even closer in the future.

The provider of rental clothing is currently using part of the APCOA car park under the Mall of Berlin in the center of the capital as an interim storage facility. Every day early in the morning, trucks bring the clean clothes there from the laundry in Groß Kienitz, Brandenburg. In the depot, employees load work and business clothing onto electrically operated cargo bikes from the provider ONOMOTION as well as mini-vans with an electric motor and deliver them to the customer with zero emissions. They bring the clothes to be washed back to the warehouse, from where the truck transports them back to the laundry late in the evening.

"By using our multi-storey car parks as a transshipment point, we enable more sustainable delivery on the last mile and thus make a contribution to protecting the climate and the environment," says Hansjörg Votteler, Managing Director at APCOA. “Due to my previous work as a managing director in this industry, I am very familiar with the importance of logistics for the workwear business. That is why I am very happy about the cooperation with MEWA.”

Cargo Bikes Enable Faster and More Efficient Deliveries

MEWA CommunicationWith the new delivery concept, MEWA can significantly reduce the CO2 emissions caused on the way. Other benefits include faster and more efficient deliveries. Compared to a truck, cargo bikes find a parking space more easily and reach buildings without direct access better. In this way, more customers can be supplied on one route.

"In the long term, we would like to operate our entire logistics in a climate-neutral manner," says Kay Simon, Head of Mobility Concepts at MEWA. "We are therefore pleased that by working with APCOA we are one step closer to this goal."

The cooperation is part of APCOA's Urban Hubs concept. The company is thus creating space in its car parks for services provided by partner companies. These include, for example, charging points for e-cars, rental stations for sharing vehicles or lockers for collecting parcels. This has created a broad network that APCOA is constantly expanding.

"For us, the cooperation with MEWA is another important step on the way to the parking space of the future," says David Müller, Director Urban Hubs at APCOA. "There, in addition to parking spaces, we offer space for services with our Urban Hubs initiative that make life easier and more sustainable."
